My (Brand New) Skin Care Routine

Writer's picture: Gillian BrooksGillian Brooks

I love summer for a number of reasons but one of them is because so many freckles appear on my face. I spend majority of the summer with no makeup on feeling very confident in my skin. And then winter comes and my skin has a breakdown and up pops breakouts, redness and a lot of dryness. This winter I was having a hard time managing my skin and overall just felt gross and ugly. No matter how much foundation and concealer I used to cover it up, it would not only look worse, but then it would get worse. So I changed things up and turned my daily skin care routine around. Before I get into my new routine its important to mention that there is no such thing as "perfect" skin. Just like you, your skin is constantly changing and breakouts are normal. Embrace these moments because they elevate those days without breakouts and dryness even more. Also just as a disclaimer, I am no skin care expert, I could be doing things totally wrong so if theres something you suggest I try or do differently, reach out to me! Okay enough babbling, here is my current skin care routine!

1. 3 days a week, before I take a shower I apply a charcoal mask for 10 minutes and rinse it off when I step in the shower. I like to do it this way because its not as messy to get the product off in the shower rather than in the sink. I use the Purifying Charcoal Mask by Skincare Cosmetics and I found it in the TJ Maxx beauty section!

2. Afterwards I was my face with the Clinique liquid facial soap for dry/ combination skin. This is apart of this 3 step system that I received as a christmas present. It's a little on the pricy side, but it goes a long way. I use this in the morning as well. I mostly just use my hands to rub it in but on the days I use the face mask, I use an exfoliator brush. I picked this one up at Walmart for $15!

3. Once I step out of the shower I continue the Clinique system with the Clarifying Lotion Twice a Day Exfoliator for dry/ combination skin. This really helps clear out my pores and gives my face a fresh feeling! I apply it with a cotton ball.

4. If I have some breakouts I'll then apply a spot treatment. I switch up the products with sometimes using Clean and Clear and sometimes Differin. Both are very helpful to reduce redness and help those blemishes decrease in size. Both products can be found at Walmart.

5. Next I apply a face oil all over. This is a MAJOR step to my routine. Lotion alone doesn't help the dryness my skin faces in the winter but ever since I started using an oil, I no longer have flaky patches on my cheeks or around my eyebrows. I use the Pearlessence 24k Gold Peptide Infusion Illuminating Facial Serum. This was also a TJ Maxx find and they had a large variety of oils!

6. Finally I apply a moisturizer. I use the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. This is the last step of the 3 step system. The smallest amount goes a long with this stuff. When I apply it, I work from the inside of my face out, starting at my T zone. This section is always the most dry for me so I like to make sure I get the most product in those places.

7. On days that I wear makeup, which isn't super often, I like to apply an eye moisturizer around my eyelids. It might be the products I'm wearing, or I'm just super aggressive when I take off my makeup but my eyes sometimes get irritated. So the Neutrogena Hydro Boost gel-cream helps relieve some of that irritation!

8. And finally I finish off the routine I spray this hydrated by Skin Lab to lock in all the moisture I just put on. This leaves me with a damp face but dries over night. I also found this at the beauty section at TJ Maxx!

You can see all the products (in order of use) above! Everyones skin is a little bit different, but this new routine has really helped my skin and overall boosted my self confidence. If you have a favorite product that you think I should try, let me know!
